Black Pine Animal Sanctuary

In the late 1980’s Karen Hoag and her husband adopted a single llama from a neighbor who could no longer care for it, and agreed to raise the llama on their small farm. From that moment on, over the years the couple became known in the area as a place to surrender wild and exotic animals that people no longer could care for properly. There were multiple reasons why the animals were surrendered, which still exist to this day. The reasons for surrendering wild and exotic animals range from the animal size, temperament, care involved, and many times lack of resources or adequate space. Originally named PARC (Professional Animal Retirement Center) in 2001, the organization became a nonprofit 501(c) 3, and was then named Black Pine Animal Sanctuary. Due to the number of animals and need for more space, in 2006 the Noble County 4H Club leased the current location to BPAS, and this is now the forever home to over 60 species of animals, reptiles, and birds. Black Pine Animal Sanctuary is one of the only multi species sanctuaries in the Midwest. The sanctuary includes an Avian Building, Primate House, and Reptile House, which are all climate controlled through the winter cold months. In 2019, Black Pine Animal Sanctuary became accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries, which assures the public that BPAS is a true sanctuary. Unlike many self-professed sanctuaries, and zoos, we do not buy, sell, breed or trade the animals at Black Pine Animal Sanctuary. Animals who now live at the sanctuary, have been surrendered or confiscated by legal authorities and will remain at Black Pine Animal Sanctuary, living peacefully and being well cared for, for the rest of their lives. John Hull started working in the farm equipment business in the year of 1896. John died in 1934 and in the same year, Norman Hull (John’s son) and Manuel Hull became partners. Norman Hull thus became the second generation in the business. Manuel Hull died in 1941 and Norman Hull became the sole owner of the company. In 1951 Richard Hull (Norman’s second oldest son) became the third generation in the business. Norman Hull Jr. (Norman’s youngest son, also known as “Buzz”) joined the business in 1960. Gibson’s was started in 1940 by Earl & Mildred Gibson (Ann Sheridan’s mom & dad). Gibson Arena was originally constructed as an ice skating rink. They could convert to a roller skating rink when there was no ice on the floor. The rink was converted solely to roller skating in 1949. Back in the day when there was still an Ice Plant on the property they also produced what many locals still proclaim to be the best ice cream they ever consumed. George & Ann Sheridan purchased the rink in 1969 from Ann’s parents and continued the family owned tradition. In a 2,000 square foot building, Founder Jim Tranter, MAS, thus conceived The 500 Line. Smith's Ace Hardware

HISTORY In September of 1971 Earl and Jim Smith opened for business in Rensselaer Indiana in the old F.O. Hershman John Deere building on Walnut Street as a Tractor Supply Franchise Store. We soon our grew our facility and moved to a new 10,000 sq. ft. building at our present location on the north side of Rensselaer in 1976. In 1978 another 5,000 sq. ft. was added to our building. June of 1981 saw another addition as Don and Earl Smith opened for business in the old Five Star Grocery in Knox Indiana. A 1,000 sq. ft. Radio Shack was opened inside of Smith Farm Store in Knox in 1991. In 2001 we saw yet another addition to our family; we purchased an Ace Hardware store in Plymouth Indiana. This store does by Smith's Ace Hardware and also Smith Farm Store. A year later there was yet another addition to the family; we opened out fourth store in Rochester Indiana. This store opened as a new store with 12,600 sq. ft. and they are busting at the seams. The latest addition came in December of 2006 when Don and Kim opened an internet store. Our first Christmas season was a success as our Internet store established new customers in 23 states and inquiries from as far away as Great Brittan. Our internet store has since grown and we are adding new things all the time. The internet store has been under going a lot of changes this past year in 2016 with its look and content. Smith Farm Store is truly a locally owned and operated company. All of the sons and the daughter of Earl Smith have worked in the stores at one time in their loves. Ledgeview Brewing Company

Our Story It started with one of those homebrew kits... Abby thought it would be a fun gift, a hobby perhaps, that Craig could enjoy so he wasn't so focused on work (a common problem among chefs). Well, it turns out Craig was pretty good at brewing beer (won an award within a year), and, since he was already a chef, it just made sense for him to combine his two passions. After a late night discussion of what they wanted to do when they grew up (they're in their forties, by the way), Craig said, "All I want to do is cook barbeque and brew my beer." A few days later Abby (who is from Goshen, IN) recalled the conversation over the phone with a hometown friend who said, "You're not going to believe this, but a place just like that is up for sale in Warsaw, Indiana." A message to the previous owner led to a plane ride (Fall of 2019, pre-Covid-19 when you could still do that and not wear a hazmat suit), which led to a visit of the building, which led to a trip home, which led to a SERIOUS LIFE-CHANGING DISCUSSION, which led to a offer of purchase. A few months and a one pandemic later, Craig and Abby packed up all their belongings (and kids, couldn't forget them), sold their house in Massachusetts, and moved to Warsaw, Indiana to begin what is now called Ledgeview Brewing Company. People ask us all the time where the name comes from. Well, the house we owned in Massachusetts was on Ledgeview Drive. When Craig started making his homebrew in the garage, he called it the Ledgeview Garage Brewery. Then, when we knew this move was really going to happen, we seriously considered using that specific name. We even thought about knocking out the south wall of the restaurant and installing a glass garage door that would open out to the patio. Then we saw how much that would cost. So yeah, no "Garage." So here we are, making some serious barbeque and getting ready to brew some amazing beer. If you can, please take the time to come and check us out after we open. We, along with our friends and family, have worked really hard to get the restaurant and brewery ready. That way, when you and your friends come to visit, all you have to do is sit back and enjoy. And who knows, maybe someday we'll find the time (and the funds) to finally install those garage doors. [read more]
